The video work documents a scenographic installation by Dries Verhoeven exhibiting 44 display cases with true-to-life scale models of human suffering: Fukushima’s nuclear reactor, the parliament building in Kiev, a drug clinic in Germany, a collapsed clothing factory in Bangladesh. Each display case is inhabited by an ant colony. Through Homo Desperatus, Dries invites and challenges visitors to observe the suffering of our time and reflect on their own role in this, from a distance.
The film is part of the expanded performance space and scenography programme Shared Space: Music, Weather, Politics, supported by EU programme Culture.
About artist
Berlin based Dutch scenographer and theatre maker Dries Verhoeven’s work is best known for site-specific or location-based theatre and installations where the spectator is involved in a dynamic relationship to the performer. His work is highly distinctive in combining unusual, visually poetic, theatrical experiences with a critical view of contemporary cultural norms and society. Recent projects are co-produced with both museums and international festivals across Europe.
