Programme

Distant Voices

Heine Avdal and Yukiko Shinozaki / fieldworks (Oslo/Brussels)
8, 9 September 18:00, Ģertrūdes ielas teātris | 10 and 7 eur

What happens if an architectural space exceeds its own borders from within? What if a situation breaks out of its spatial limits?

The show features a structure of moveable objects, a modular, transformable sculpture, which oscillates between an installation, a stage design and an architectural element, continually shaping and reshaping the space in which it is presented. The imagination is invited to travel: from the macro- to the micro-level and vice versa, between memory, actual perception and anticipation, and through alternative versions of the situation’s here and now.

“distant voices” recently won The Kazimierz Krzanowski Promotional Award 2015 at KONTRAPUNKT Festival in Szczecin for “art that provokes thinking and stimulates imagination, enabling everyone to find his/her own sense of it”.

The work is part of the expanded performance space and scenography programme, Shared Space: Music, Weather, Politics, supported by EU programme Culture.

Performances in Riga are supported by EEA grants programme as part of the project “Regions.Art.Nature” (EEZLV04/GSKA/2013/04) which will continue wit activities in Latvian regions till April 30, 2016.

About artist

Heine Avdal and Yukiko Shinozaki’s work is concerned with “performativity” and allows for an open interpretation of movement as a heterogeneous combination of a variety of media. Consequently, the artists draw on a broad range of disciplines and expertise: performance, dance, visual arts, video, music, and technology.

Every performance plays on the tension and contrast between the body and objects, the body and the mind, fact and fiction/representation, the tangible and the invisible, the organic and the artificial. Recurrent themes in Avdal and Shinozaki’s productions include the relationship between performer and spectator, the non-hierarchical approach to the various elements of a performance, and the exploration of both theatrical and non-theatrical environments.
