Levée is a film based on performance by Boris Charmatz Levée des Conflits. It tosses dance onto unfamiliar terrain, in a no man’s land between science fiction and anthropology. Like refugees in the midst of an unreal landscape, the dancers are devoured by an entropic maelstrom. As if seen through a magnifying glass, exhaustion, repetition, and the bitter struggle among the dancers culminates in a chaotic knot of bodies.

The film is part of the expanded performance space and scenography programme Shared Space: Music, Weather, Politics, supported by EU programme Culture.

About artist

In his works, French dancer and choreographer Boris Charmatz, seeks to approach the realms of fine art and philosophy. When he accepted the post of artistic director of the Centre chorégraphique national de Rennes et de Bretagne he declared the institution a museum for dance. Since then, the centre has regularly invited contemporary artists and thinkers from all disciplines to work together on new forms and formats. Musée de la danse is today a platform and source of inspirations for new developments in the international dance scene.

César Vayssié, French director and filmmaker, has been directing free, empirical cinema for several years, with movies devoid of any production constraints, the forms of which he deliberately reassesses out of a desire to put himself in the periphery of cinematographic narration. His work oscillates between that of documentary and fiction, dance and performing art.
