“The children now love luxury. They have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise”, Socrates has said in the 4th Century BC. The statements of different times consider the youth as incomprehensible and graceless.
Young people have been addressed as the golden generation, the hippies generation, or, for instance, the generation of awakening. Nowadays teenagers are called the Me Me Me Generation. This performance is a conversation with five real school children who belong to it.
The work is commissioned by the festival as a part of the festival’s 20th anniversary programme, Twenty.
About Artist
Latvian director Elmārs Seņkovs has studied pedagogy and theatre and is one of the most productive and interesting theatre makers of the young generation. He started his professional career at independent theatres, and was soon invited to work in the National theatre, Valmiera theatre and Russian theatre. For Elmārs the theatre stage is like a playground where he constantly tests new forms and ideas, each time coming up with unexpected results. His long-term collaboration with scenographer Reinis Dzudzilo and visual artist Krista Dzudzilo has created some incredibly strong visual metaphors and spatial propositions. Recently his creative approach, however, has matured and become minimalistic.
